Blood Test May Detect Alzheimer's Years Before Symptoms Appear

Helicobacter pylori, commonly known as H. pylori, is a type of bacteria that infects the stomach lining and can cause various digestive problems. This spiral-shaped bacterium has the unique ability to survive in the acidic environment of the stomach by producing an enzyme called urease, which neutralizes stomach acid around it. While many people with H. pylori infection show no symptoms, others may develop gastritis, peptic ulcers, or in rare cases, stomach cancer. The infection is typically acquired during childhood and can persist for years if left untreated.

Laboratory testing plays a crucial role in diagnosing H. pylori infection. Several types of tests are available, each with specific advantages. Non-invasive tests include the urea breath test, which detects the presence of urease enzyme activity, and stool antigen tests, which identify H. pylori proteins in fecal samples. Blood tests can detect antibodies against H. pylori, indicating current or past infection, though they cannot distinguish between active and previous infections. For more definitive diagnosis, invasive tests performed during endoscopy include rapid urease tests, histological examination of stomach tissue samples, and bacterial culture.

The urea breath test is considered one of the most accurate non-invasive methods for detecting active H. pylori infection. During this test, the patient drinks a solution containing a special form of urea. If H. pylori is present, the bacteria break down the urea, releasing carbon dioxide that can be measured in the patient's breath. The stool antigen test is another reliable option that directly detects H. pylori antigens in stool samples and is particularly useful for confirming eradication after treatment.

Testing for H. pylori is recommended for people experiencing persistent stomach pain, unexplained nausea, frequent bloating, or those with a history of peptic ulcers. It is also important for individuals with a family history of stomach cancer or those taking long-term anti-inflammatory medications. After treatment with antibiotics and acid-reducing medications, follow-up testing is essential to confirm that the infection has been successfully eliminated, typically performed at least four weeks after completing therapy to ensure accurate results.
