Warning Signs of Preeclampsia During Pregnancy: Key Symptoms to Monitor

Hepatitis B is a serious liver infection caused by the hepatitis B virus. When a person is infected, their immune system produces antibodies to fight the virus. The Hepatitis B Surface Antibody test, also known as anti-HBs or HBsAb, measures the presence and level of these protective antibodies in the blood. This test is primarily used to determine if someone has developed immunity to hepatitis B, either through vaccination or after recovering from a previous infection.

The test is commonly ordered for several important reasons. Healthcare providers use it to check if a person has responded successfully to the hepatitis B vaccine series, which is typically given in three or four doses. It is also used to screen people who may have been exposed to the virus, such as healthcare workers, family members of infected individuals, or those who have had accidental needle sticks. Additionally, the test helps doctors determine if someone needs a booster dose of the vaccine or if they remain protected against the virus.

When the test results show positive or reactive levels of hepatitis B surface antibodies, it indicates that the person has immunity to hepatitis B. This immunity can result from vaccination or from having recovered from a past infection. A positive result generally means the person is protected against future hepatitis B infections. Conversely, a negative or non-reactive result suggests that the person does not have protective antibodies and may be susceptible to infection. In such cases, vaccination or additional vaccine doses may be recommended.

The hepatitis B surface antibody test is a simple blood test that requires no special preparation. A healthcare professional draws a small blood sample from a vein, usually in the arm, and sends it to a laboratory for analysis. Results are typically available within a few days. For people at ongoing risk of exposure to hepatitis B, periodic testing may be recommended to ensure continued immunity, as antibody levels can decrease over time in some individuals.
