Symptoms often involve muscle cramps or spasms, numbness and tingling in the hands and feet, seizures, abnormal heart rhythms, and in chronic cases, dental problems and cataracts. Testing for hypocalcemia typically involves measuring total and ionized calcium levels, along with parathyroid hormone, vitamin D, magnesium, and phosphate levels to determine the root cause.

Proper diagnosis of calcium disorders requires accurate laboratory testing and careful interpretation of results. Healthcare providers may order a comprehensive metabolic panel that includes calcium measurements as part of routine screening or when symptoms suggest a calcium imbalance. Additional testing helps distinguish between different causes and guides appropriate treatment. Regular monitoring through laboratory tests is essential for patients with known calcium disorders to ensure treatment effectiveness and prevent complications.
