Hemoglobin A1c, commonly known as HbA1c or glycated hemoglobin, is a crucial blood test used to measure average blood sugar levels over the past two to three months. This test works by measuring the percentage of hemoglobin proteins in red blood cells that have glucose attached to them. Since red blood cells live for approximately three months, the HbA1c test provides a long-term picture of blood glucose control, making it more comprehensive than daily blood sugar measurements that only show glucose levels at a single point in time.

The HbA1c test serves multiple important purposes in diabetes care. It is primarily used to diagnose type 2 diabetes and prediabetes in adults, and to monitor how well diabetes is being managed in people already diagnosed with the condition. For individuals with diabetes, regular HbA1c testing helps healthcare providers assess whether treatment plans are effective or need adjustment. The test is typically recommended every three to six months for people with diabetes, though testing frequency may vary based on individual circumstances and how well blood sugar is controlled.

Understanding HbA1c results is essential for proper diabetes management. For people without diabetes, a normal HbA1c level is below 5.7 percent. A level between 5.7 and 6.4 percent indicates prediabetes, which means blood sugar levels are higher than normal but not yet high enough to be classified as diabetes. An HbA1c level of 6.5 percent or higher on two separate tests indicates diabetes. For most adults with diabetes, the general target is to maintain an HbA1c level below 7 percent, though individual goals may differ based on age, overall health, and other factors.

Several factors can affect HbA1c test results and should be considered when interpreting the values. Conditions that affect red blood cells, such as anemia, recent blood loss, or blood transfusions, can lead to inaccurate results. Certain hemoglobin variants, which are more common in people of African, Mediterranean, or Southeast Asian descent, may also interfere with some testing methods. Additionally, pregnancy, kidney disease, and liver disease can influence HbA1c levels. The test does not require fasting, making it convenient for patients, and results are usually available within a few days. People should discuss their results with their healthcare provider to understand what the numbers mean for their specific situation and what steps may be needed to maintain or improve their blood sugar control.
